Matthew Chapter 9 Verses 36-38
But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted and they were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith He unto His disciples, “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth labourers into the harvest.” (KJV)
In the prior verses it states that Jesus went through all the towns and villages preaching, teaching, and healing all kinds of sicknesses and diseases. When He looked out and saw all the crowds of people He had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Those who do not know GOD are like sheep wandering aimlessly, without purpose.
Jesus then says to His disciples that the harvest is plenteous, naming the souls that need to be led to Jesus as “the harvest”. We are told that those willing to hear God’s call and step out in faith according to His will are few. What happens to a harvest if nobody is there to collect it? It dies. We are commanded to pray for the harvest, but we can only genuinely pray if we are willing to be His hands and His feet. Are we willing to step out in faith and follow the Holy Spirit when we are called? Are we ready for this? Maybe you feel like you are not ready. I know that it can be absolutely terrifying and uncomfortable at times! Maybe it is because we feel like we don’t know the Bible well enough to answer people’s questions? Be encouraged today, because HE will give you the skills necessary to bring in the harvest which HE has placed before you.
Perhaps our first prayer today should be, “Dear God, give us the courage and help us to be bold!”
